Dr Teresa Lappe-Osthege

Teresa was a Research associate on the BIOSEC project. She leads a project researching the illegal bird trade in the Western Balkans, exploring;
(a) the socio-economic interests that sustain the trade;
(b) how certain stakeholders, such as national governments or non-governmental organisations, respond to it;
(c) what implications, if any, it has on political stability in the Western Balkans and security in the EU.

Focusing particularly on Albania and Serbia, Teresa’s research generates much-needed empirical data on a lucrative branch of the illegal wildlife trade with established links inside the EU itself.

This project is a natural continuation of her PhD research, which she started in October 2014 at the Department of Politics after she was awarded the University of Sheffield’s Harry Worthington Scholarship. Within the framework of her PhD, Teresa explores the paradoxes of environmental peacebuilding, using the European Union’s peacebuilding policies in Kosovo as a case study.

Teresa is also a Visiting Fellow at the Marjan Centre for the Study of War and the Non-Human Sphere at King’s College London, where she examines the interaction of climate change and conflict, with a particular emphasis on the humanitarian dimension.

Prior to coming to Sheffield, Teresa worked for the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, a London-based think tank. She completed an MA in Conflict, Security and Development at King’s College London and holds a BA in European Studies from Maastricht University (NL).
