Dr Judith Verweijen

Judith Verweijen joined the University of Sheffield as a Lecturer in September 2019, having previously held posts at the University of Sussex, the University of Ghent and the Nordic Africa Institute.

Her research looks at the intersections between war and natural resources from a micro perspective. Specifically, she examines the involvement of violent actors in resource conflicts in war zones–and how they resist, enable or profit from resource exploitation. She has analysed conflicts related to industrial and artisanal mining, logging, nature conservation and land. Her main focus is on the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where she has conducted extensive field research since 2010.
